QUESTIONS ANSWERED...

What are the costs and benefits of installing an electric vehicle (EV) charger at home?

Answer...

I paid about $1k USD to have 50 amp service installed in my garage when I bought my EV. I got a $300 tax credit, making the net cost about $700. As a result, I have not had to go to a single charging station ever since (with the exception of an occasional road trip, where the charging has been easy and convenient).

I plug the car in when I get home, and I wake up every day with a full “tank”. I did not expect that aspect of owning an EV to be an improvement in my quality of life, but I love not having to go to gas stations anymore.

What is the process for installing an electric vehicle charger on your house?

Answer...

About five years ago a client bought a Tesla and asked me to install the charger unit on the wall at the back of the house.
After calculating the load and available capacity in the main panel, I mapped the cable run and purchased the breaker, cable, and accessories for the installation.
Holes were drilled, the cable was run and secured with proper staples and the Tesla charger( actually a transformer) was wired and attached to the wall, per the enclosed instructions. The breaker was wired and energized to test the unit. It took about two hours to wire it up, plus a couple of hours of gathering materials and reading the installation instructions.

It worked perfectly and was a nice additional selling point a year later when the client decided to move to another region for a better job opportunity.
N.B. Attaching the individual wires to the Tesla unit was the hardest part of the whole job. There is no extra space in the housing of the unit. Very precise measurements and stripping of insulation are key to a good-looking result. Manipulating the wires of heavy cable is not easily done, but it is simple. Use of the right size ‘hickey' to bend the short stubs into position for attachment to the lugs is the trickiest aspect of the job.

I imagine doing more of these charger installation jobs will be part of the business in the future, especially since the new legislation will bring back hefty rebates on electric cars. I can't wait! Experience says I can make a decent profit on these installations. It's the wave that I want to ride!

Sicklerville Home EV Charger Installers Cost TIPS...

Top 10 questions to ask when hiring a Tesla charger installer

Hiring a Tesla charger installer means that you have bought an EV or is going to buy one shortly. Or it could also be that you would like to install one in a parking station where electric vehicles would be parked in. In any case, it would be important for you to ask 10 important questions while looking for and hiring an installer for a Tesla charging point.

  1. What would be the installation costs?

Keep in mind that each Tesla charging point deals with power supplies ranging between 208 and 240 V on a circuit of 60 – 90 Amp. Generally, the hourly charge for installation ranges between 50 and 100 USD.

  1. Are you certified?

A Tesla charger has to be set up by a trained and certified electrician, and you have to find out whether your installer is one. You have to know where he obtained his certification from, so as to determine whether it has been received from an authorized body.

  1. Do you have the license?

You must also find out whether the installer has the license to operate in the area, and has a valid license for the year to perform Tesla charging point installation.

  1. Would extensive electrical work be needed?

The cost of installation of a Tesla charger station could be as much as $1,700, on average. However, if there is a need for extensive electrical work, the cost could be as high as $5,000 – excluding the hourly labor expenses.

  1. Which size of breaker do I require?

A 240 V NEMA 14-50 outlet is the one that is recommended for home charging installation. This kind of outlet is used often for recreational vehicles and electric stoves. It is set up with a 50 Amp circuit breaker and allows around 37 kmph recharge rate.

  1. What are the installation requirements?

With all the new Tesla vehicles, one of the standard equipment is an adapter for a 110 V outlet. It offers a range of around 2 – 4 miles for every hour of charge, based on the vehicle. The setup of a Wall Connector is recommended for the best kind of home charging experience.

  1. How much electricity is required?

An electrician can give you a proper idea about the type of charger that will satisfy your requirements, on the basis of the particular EV model that you have, how often you tend to use it as well as how fast you wish to charge it right at home.

  1. Will an electrical permit be needed?

Inspections and permits are not needed for all electrical installations or works. An electrician can check with the Technical Safety BC or municipality to know what is needed.

  1. What would be a basic charger setup expense?

This means that the total installation costs for a Tesla wall connector would be in the range of 630 and $1,100 USD, assuming that you will be choosing a basic unit.

  1. Do I need to upgrade?

An electrician can answer this, based on your electrical panel evaluation.
